Q. How many school directors are there in each district?
A. In Thurston County, all school boards consist of 5 directors. All but Griffin School District have designated position residency boundaries. RCW 28A.343.300.
Q. How long is a term?
A. Terms are designed to be 4 years. If a position is vacated before the next election cycle, an election may be held to elect someone to complete the remaining 2 years of the positions term. RCW 28A.343.300, RCW 28A.343.310.
Q. How often are elections?
A. School board directors are only elected on odd years. Terms are staggered so that only 2 or 3 members are elected in one year. RCW 28A.343.310,
Q. What happens if there is a vacancy between elections?
A. The district is required to post this vacancy publicly. A majority of the remaining board may appoint a new member through a majority decision. The appointment will be in place until the next election opportunity. Ref: RCW 29A.24.171, RCW 28A.343.370.
